La Sagrera

The new La Sagrera Station represents one of Barcelona’s most significant urban challenges. Its scale, technical complexity and metropolitan role require mobility, architecture, public space and urban transformation to be addressed simultaneously. More than a major transport infrastructure, the project offers an opportunity to establish new connections between neighbourhoods historically divided by the gap that the train rails create.

With an expected annual passenger volume of over 100 million, La Sagrera is conceived as a major intermodal hub integrating high-speed and “Rodalies” commuter rail services with the new La Sagrera Bus Station, while providing direct connections to the metro and the rest of the urban transport networks.

The project extends well beyond the station itself. The La Sagrera–Sant Martí Park unfolds across its roof, creating a new urban landscape that transforms the former railway barrier into a space of connection between Sant Andreu–La Sagrera and Sant Martí. This strategy is reinforced by the redevelopment of the Sant Martí Park, improving cross-city connections, accessibility and the continuity of public spaces and green areas.

Inside the station, a large intermodal atrium organizes passenger flows, brings natural light deep into the building and facilitates orientation between the different levels. Above it, a bioclimatic canopy defines the main entrance and establishes a new urban landmark within the park.

The transformation extends into the surrounding area, where an ambitious urban development will introduce housing, offices, hotels, commercial buildings and new public facilities. La Sagrera thus takes on the challenge of turning a major transport infrastructure into a catalyst for a new metropolitan centre.

The scale and complexity of La Sagrera have also provided an opportunity to push b720’s technical and digital capabilities to their full potential. The advanced implementation of BIM methodologies has helped optimize project development and multidisciplinary coordination, strengthening the studio’s expertise in large-scale infrastructure and consolidating an integrated approach in which architecture, innovation and technology evolve together.
