First prize in the design and construction competition for the new headquarters of the Servei d’Emergències Mèdiques (SEM) of Catalunya, in collaboration with AECOM and UTE Ferrovial Construcción – Climava
The new SEM headquarters are inserted in the current Duran i Reynals Hospital complex, in a balanced volumetric dialogue with the pre-existing buildings and with respect to the alignments of the Hospital, so it is understood as another volume of the current compositional vocabulary, reinforcing the facade of the complex on Gran Vía and extending it towards the East with views of the city. The proposal must respond to the challenge of putting a 21,000m2 building into operation only 12 months after signing the contract.
The building is composed of two clear parallel programmatic strips. The structural system generates column-free floors, allowing the maximum degree of adaptability. The construction solutions have been defined taking into account the execution time and the durability of the materials, thus reducing future maintenance costs.
The configuration of the proposal achieves, in addition to the current and future integration in the campus, flexibility and sustainability, other key objectives such as maximising natural light, generating pleasant interior circulation and interrelation spaces for users around a semi-open bioclimatic courtyard (which avoids the excessive use of elevators and emergency stairs) and generating landscaped outdoor spaces for the comfort of workers, among others.
