The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has awarded the contracts for drafting the projects aimed at transforming Madrid Chamartín-Clara Campoamor Station into an international benchmark for sustainable, multimodal, connected, and integrated mobility.
The contract covers two key components:
The Global Basic Project, which will be developed by the Joint Venture (UTE) ” Chamartín Ecosistema Abierto”, composed of b720 Fermín Vázquez Arquitectos, UNStudio, and Esteyco, that won the international design competition launched by Adif AV to redevelop this major transportation hub.
Several construction projects that will serve as the basis for tendering the following works:
- The new North Terminal of the station, which includes the northern platform covering and canopies for the Kiss & Ride area and taxi stand. The current station will become the South Terminal of the complex, with the new terminal built to the north of the existing tracks.
- The eastward expansion of the current concourse and the construction of six new high-speed rail tracks. This continues the ongoing station expansion, which has already increased high-speed capacity from 6 to 12 tracks (numbers 14 to 25). The next phase will add tracks 26 to 31, bringing the total to 18 standard-gauge tracks once complete.
- A new corporate office building for Adif and Adif AV, as well as a new parking facility for the station.
The Global Basic Project will outline all the necessary steps for commissioning the revamped station. It may be divided into smaller basic projects as deemed appropriate by Adif AV. In addition to the main construction projects, a fourth project will be developed for a new ventilation shaft connected to the Pío XII road tunnel that runs underneath the station.
This phased planning approach ensures flexible execution, tailored to the station’s operational needs, while minimizing the impact on rail services and the surrounding environment during construction.
