Housing L’Eixample de Mar
The four buildings that make up the set are situated between a regular square of new creation and the old plot of the city. Wrapping the facades, a 90 cm thick “wall” joins the buildings. This “wall” is constructed with panels of prefabricated concrete stained in three tones, arranged as large building blocks placed one on top of another that are cut with openings of different dimension and depth, creating a set of lights and shadows.
Commercial activities happen in ground floor spaces that gradually fall to accommodate changes in level. The first and the second group of buildings are joined by a low block of a single plant. The accesses to the houses appear as excavations on the ground floor, illuminated internally and lined with steel panels. The homes have been designed with the intention of providing generous and open living spaces. Again, simple materials are used: wooden floors, white marble in kitchens and bathrooms. The 90 cm “wall” space is also used to provide open shelves and enclosed closets. A balcony has been projected for each dwelling.
